Down in the cellar of the neighboring house
Down there lives the doll maker.
Through his windows shimmers light
All night long

From his apartment door
Sticky smoke.
It hammers and rattles,

saws and planes,
grinds and stains
continuously in his works.

Strung up on a blanket
under the table
Squeak and sniff
Beep and lick,

the little ones fart and burp
cuddled up close together
like matches in a coned box

Such a work takes 6 weeks
From order to delivery.
From time to time a dark barge docks
And a veiled figure
Pick up the deliveries,

to ship them to distant lands.

Never before has a work returned
And it was also hard for me.
